Jón Þorleifsson, 1891-1961, studied art in Copenhagen. Many of his works are expressionist in style. Þorleifsson was influence by Cezanne, but he nevertheless embraced a range of styles depending on his subject. His paintings of the Siglufjörður herring industry, including Fisherwomen, are well known. Fisherwomen is a large work, which was shown at the World Fair in New York 1939-40 now decorates the lobby of the Icelandic Parliament.
